Community to Discuss Immigration With Chief, Mexican Consul

March 27, 2008 - 11:13am
MANASSAS, Va. (AP) - Prince William County's police chief and the Mexican Embassy's consul general meet with the county's immigrant community Thursday night to discuss the county's new policy on illegal immigration.

Mexican Consul Enrique Escorza says there are misconceptions about the policy, which requires police to check the legal status of suspected illegal immigrants questioned for a crime or traffic violation.

Escorza says some immigrants believe they can't report a crime out of concern that they will be asked to show they have documents to be in the country. Escorza says that is not the case.

A Prince William County police spokeswoman says the meeting is one in dozens of attempts by Police Chief Charlie Deane to "get out the facts" about the immigration crackdown.

The 7 p.m. meeting will be held at the old Kmart building in Woodbridge at the intersection of Routes 123 and 1. The meeting is open to the public.
