That's a delicious 8 inch round that gets smaller every year.

Looks awful good to me!!! It will take them all of 30 seconds to vote it up or down.
by all means
Report Commentby B C. @ 8:55am - Wed Jan 2nd, 2008
Crime is rampant, illegals are swarming, Maryland is a cesspool and lets spend time on a cake...you go Maryland!
Naw...
Report Commentby Mickey B. @ 10:54am - Wed Jan 2nd, 2008
Please...there's time to honor this noble dessert.

Eat a slice of a 10-layered Smith Island Cake and who cannot agree it deserves a honored place in the pantheon of state symbols -- right up there with the Baltimore Oriole, the Terrapin, the Ches. Retriever, and the famed blue crab.
Cost
Report Commentby Mike C. @ 11:36am - Wed Jan 2nd, 2008
I wonder how much time and money (time=money) is spent around things of zero importance such as determining what the state desert will be and if there should be one. I'm also interested in learnind what this expense is called when its lobbied for.
Your tax dollars at work...
Report Commentby Gary D. @ 1:14pm - Wed Jan 2nd, 2008
I would bet that they appoint some kind of research commitee to discuss the the issue and report back and make a recomendation. Should cost us about $180,000.00. Maybe our great Governor will call a special session later this year to vote on it.
Oh please - this is sooooo important
Report Commentby Gloria M. @ 9:10am - Wed Jan 2nd, 2008
Like B C said - but are we surprised? I hardly think so but when you are in high places and you are wealthy and feel completely secure then the problems of the middle class or lower are of no concern to you. I know what I would like to do with the cake.
Looking at the plus side
Report Commentby I've been thinking @ 9:28am - Wed Jan 2nd, 2008
The more time spent debating on the type of state dessert...the less time spent on figuring out which new taxes and fees to [no swearing please].

Report Commentby Frank W. @ 9:54am - Wed Jan 2nd, 2008
The Republicans will find a way to invalidate the vote anyway. Maybe they will "eclair" an invalid session.
Perhaps...

but only because Democrats keeping "fudging" the law.
Have you seen Maryland-folk?
Report Commentby Peach B. @ 10:40am - Wed Jan 2nd, 2008
They should skip the dessert.
What about the Berger cookie?
Report Commentby Julia K. @ 10:56am - Wed Jan 2nd, 2008

To answer the question
Report Commentby John G. @ 11:35am - Wed Jan 2nd, 2008
Yes.

And it should be a PIEROGI :-D
What?
Report Commentby Michael H. @ 4:27pm - Wed Jan 2nd, 2008
Pierogi are entrees!

I agree with most of the comments stating that Maryland has MUCH more important things to discuss in the State house then desserts.
Should MD have a state dessert?
Report Commentby Kate A. @ 12:09pm - Wed Jan 2nd, 2008
Yes - mud pie.
NOOOOOOO
Report Commentby C R. @ 12:18pm - Wed Jan 2nd, 2008
This will be another reason for the State and the United States to say American is obese.
Why not
Report Commentby Jane B. @ 1:00pm - Wed Jan 2nd, 2008
Sure go on, no need to take care of your real problems like crime and losing inmates.
Empty dish
Report Commentby Joseph N. @ 1:11pm - Wed Jan 2nd, 2008
In honor of our effective lawmakers and idiots who think this is important-should be a white tablecloth, fine china dish and outerplate, of course fine china teacup and plate, all the finest silver absolutely unneccessary for this "desert", and of course the fine linen napkins. The dish has not a spec on it, and the cup not a drop! That is it for Maryland, all pomp and nothing to eat or drink!
How about something
Report Commentby Special Ed V. @ 1:19pm - Wed Jan 2nd, 2008
To honor us working Americans with insurance that still get reamed by premiums and copays?

We can have a state donut hole.
Already got one

Report Commentby Mickey B. @ 5:23pm - Wed Jan 2nd, 2008
You know neither the dessert nor the people who eat this treat. I can assure you that whitetable cloths and fine china do not happen.

You are more likely to see this tasty treat served up on paper plates or chipped willow-ware on a pile of newspapers where crab shells have been pushed to one side. It often ends a crab feast. It is also given to the bereaved, usuallly in a tupperware cake container.

As they say in Balmer, "Get with the program, hun."

I highly recommend a day trip in calm weather over to Smith Island, Md. It makes a delightful day trip by ferry boat. The folks are salt of the earth types, not silver and linen at all.
Salt of the earth?

How about Smith Island at low tide on a hot summer day. Yummy!

Please spare us. Don't we have enough fat people without promoting more caloric intake?

Whatever the dessert it will not be welcome in Montgomery County.
Shouldn't this be voted
Report Commentby David A. @ 4:14pm - Wed Jan 2nd, 2008
by the citizens and not elected legistators of Maryland?
Nope
Report Commentby Michael H. @ 4:30pm - Wed Jan 2nd, 2008
They can take the chance that most voters (and lobbists) don't care about this.

It's takes no spine to make THIS legislation law.
You're On To Something..
Report Commentby Jack F. @ 4:39pm - Wed Jan 2nd, 2008
However, do you think that Maryland should be deciding such a weighty topic in a vacuum? How will the adoption of a state dessert mesh with the crazy quilt of other state desserts (e.g. Boston Cream Pie in MA and Kuchen in SD)? Clearly, my friends, what is needed is a national dessert policy.

You KNOW anything Republican won't get passed in Maryland.

The DEMOCRATS have control over this state.

And the Democrats only serve themselves.
What's next, an official state microbe?
Report Commentby Gerry O. @ 7:03pm - Wed Jan 2nd, 2008
This thing of many states legislatures have about wasting taxpayer-paid time designating meaningless state symbols is an interesting phenomenum. How's about an official state dirt? Or an official state polutant? Or an official state "Yo Mama" joke? Or an official state geological fault (in Howard Co.). How about an official state crime? The list could go on....
It's a trick question
