UPPER MARLBORO, Md. - A man who was mistakenly released after being charged with sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl is back in police custody.

John Henri Palmont, 27, turned himself in at Prince George's County Jail around 2 p.m. Monday. Palmont arrived at the jail with his lawyer.

A Prince George's County Sheriff's Office spokesman tells WTOP Palmont will also be charged with escaping from custody.

Palmont was in a secure ward of the Prince George's County Hospital when a corrections officer walked into the wrong room and handed him release papers on Friday night.

He was hospitalized after breaking his arm, dislocating a shoulder and cracking two ribs while jumping out of a window during his arrest.

Although Palmont walked out of the hospital, he is still being charged with escaping from custody because he knew he shouldn't have been released, police say.

Palmont was arrested Thursday for the Aug. 3 assault at his home in the Capitol Heights area -- the same area where the sexual assault occurred.

Police say that the suspect knocked on the girl's door that afternoon and asked to use the telephone.

The girl let him in, and he pulled out a handgun before sexually assaulting her.

Palmont was being held without bond.
