Cheap Wine Wins!

June 29, 2007 - 10:51am
SACRAMENTO - Apparently the price you pay for your wine doesn't translate to the palate. Of the 350 chardonnay's in the California State Fair competition, some going for as much as $100 a bottle, a wine affectionately known as 'Two Buck Chuck' won the Double Gold Award.

In a blind taste test, the 2005 Charles Shaw Chardonnay that sells for $1.99 at Trader Joe's, was deemed best tasting. Fair organizers say the 64 judges do not know the brand or the price of the wines they are tasting.

Critics say the state fair competition shouldn't be taken seriously because the judges are not true connoisseurs. But the chief judge and competition director told The Press Democrat the panel includes wine makers and restaurant owners.
