Wolf Wants Historic Corridor Protected

September 29, 2006 - 12:07pm
WASHINGTON (AP) - Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., wants Congress to preserve a historic corridor stretching from Monticello in Virginia to Gettysburg, Pa.

Wolf's bill would create a national heritage area, a relatively new designation created by the National Park Service, for the corridor that includes land in four states. The heritage area would be called the Journey Through Hallowed Ground.

Besides Monticello, sites in the proposed corridor would include Montpelier, James Madison's home, and the homes of former presidents James Monroe, Zachary Taylor, Dwight Eisenhower and Teddy Roosevelt. The route also includes Civil War battlefields and sites from the underground railroad.

Peyton Knight, of the Washington-based National Center for Public Policy Research, told a Congressional committee yesterday that the bill could end up hurting property owners.

Wolf says he'd like to see both sides work out a compromise.
