Snow Days Now Means More School Later

December 9, 2005 - 2:36pm
WASHINGTON -- Kids all over the region wore their pajamas inside out last night and it worked! No school today, but for some kids, the school year just got longer.

Prince George's County Public School students will already have to make up Friday's snow day at the end of the year, making the last day of classes Thursday, June 8.

A Prince George's County School spokesperson says school officials will have some flexibility if more days are missed, but this snow day will need to be made up.

Students in Montgomery County have four days allocated for snow. When and if they take a fifth snow day, they'll need to extend their school calendar into the summer.

In Alexandria, public schools schedule five days as student holidays. But every time the school takes a day off for snow, a holiday turns into a makeup day.

Friday's cancellation means students will be going to school on Friday, March 17, St. Patrick's Day.

Students in neighboring Fairfax County have to make up school if there are more than three snow days.

In Arlington County, kids are already going to school a few extra minutes each day, so that the first five snow days won't have to be made up.
