Racial Epithets Anger Students and Administrators at UVa.

August 29, 2005 - 11:44am
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Students and administrators at the University of Virginia are angry about recent incidents in which racial epithets were used against black students.

Jade Craig, a senior from Mississippi who co-chairs the Black Leaders Institute at the school, says the situation "creates an unwelcoming environment for African-American students."

University president John Casteen III is overseas on business. He sent an e-mail message Sunday to students, staff and faculty, calling the racial epithets troubling.

According to the Richmond Times Dispatch, one student found a racial epithet written on a dry-erase board by his campus room early Saturday.

Craig says that in another incident, four black students arrived at their off-campus apartment last week to find a racially offensive message posted on their door.

And three times last week, racial slurs were yelled at black students from passing vehicles driving on or near the university campus.

More than 200 students, black and white, rallied on campus on Saturday to show their opposition to the racist acts.
