Marion Barry to Teach Chemistry Class at Ballou

March 31, 2005 - 7:15am
WASHINGTON (AP) - He's been mayor. He's now a councilman. But not everyone knows that Marion Barry studied chemistry in college. And Thursday, he's going to show off that knowledge.

Barry will be at Ballou High School in Southeast, where he will teach a chemistry class. He studied science at LeMoyne College in Memphis.

The Ward Eight councilman is joining School Superintendent Clifford Janey, who will be "Principal for a Day" at Ballou. Janey plans to make the morning announcements and eat lunch with students.

Ballou has had its share of problems, including the shooting death of a student inside the school last year. But it's trying to improve its image. Those efforts include an appearance by the school's band in last week's inaugural parade.
