Whitman is a very good school.

Had it been Einstein, Wheaton or Kennedy, then the mere threat should be taken seriously.
Yes Whitman is a good school
Report Commentby Carol H. @ 3:24pm - Wed May 13th, 2009
but why wouldn't you take the threat just as seriously? Because it's an "affluent" school? With rich parents? I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just not understanding what it is you are trying to say.

Pardon me if I am being "dense".
Carol H., you pretty much nailed it.

Other than getting a paper cut, have a book bag dropped on their foot, or at the absolute worst, slamming a finger in their personal BMW, none of these 8 Whitman kids have much to worry about.

were raised on the mean streets of Bethesda and learned more from a 3-minute record than they ever did in school.

While such a threat may cause their SAT prep class to be delayed, if they had been Einstein, Wheaton or Kennedy students, the distractions would have been welcome, i.e. if they had even been in school to receive the threats.

Please Carol, ask your housekeeper and nanny what they think of the differences between schools. The "affluence" aspect that you seem to be dismissing does make a difference.

As I said earlier John, no offense intenended. You seem to have a strong dislike of Einstein, Wheaton and Kennedy, pardon me if i am incorrect (2 days in a row???)

Here is a clue to who is the perpetrator -
Report Commentby Telescope @ 4:07pm - Wed May 13th, 2009
He or she knows little about computers. He or she mistakenly thinks they can send email anonymously.

All investigators have to do is look in the email header to trace its IP address of origin and its Message ID, and they will have their suspect.
Not necessarily...

How hard would it be to go to a library in a neighboring town, or one you're passing through, go to the library, get a free anonymous yahoo email account, and make your threats from there?

But forget about using any web mail service.

Unsecured WiFi + telnet + open (unsecured) SMTP relay server in any backwater former Soviet state

As soon as local law enforcement sees that the email originated in, say Turkmenistan, they will probably write the whole thing off as a hoax. Even if they don't, good luck getting cooperation with the investigation.

"If I make my threats via an "anonymous" email account at a public library or via an unsecure WiFi with a Soviet proxy server, then my email cannot be traced."

Where there is Internet connectivity, there is traceability. I concede, however, that sometimes the trace is more difficult than simply soliciting the sender's ISP for the sender's identity.

For that matter, international terrorists are unsuccessful at trying to communicate anonymously via the Internet.
Of Course it's the "Soviets"...

A teenager caught with a map of Camp David and motorcade route, and bomb materials, and guns. Home to teenagers who held up an ice cream shop. Home to 2 convicted US Government employees for spying. Oh and so many "plush" neighborhoods financed by speed cameras. I worked in Bethesda MD and have never ever seen such a clueless bunch of people living off inheritance money. My God we should all be proud we aren’t lumped in with those "nanny having, private school attending, parents who have a 'spot' saved for Muffy or Chip at the 'office'.

I am so glad I am blue collar, because you'll pay me big bucks to fix things I'd do for free anywhere else in the DC area.

I live in Bethesda. I chose to live here because of the quiet, well-kept neighborhoods, the virtually low-crime rate and the fairly easy access to the city. I'm glad we have a higher tax rate. Keeps my area somewhat stable.

We are also on average better educated and more informed then some of the other areas. (Voted 5th best in the country by cnn)

Yep, hired a nanny in the past, have maids to clean-up, have the lawn and driveway done, play golf at one of our several courses, drive a bmw and can afford any speeding ticket (or blue-collar service) which comes my way!!!

Since when is a "death threat" illegal.....
Report Commentby Jowey Styxx @ 5:50pm - Thu May 14th, 2009
Guess this is an example of selective "Rule of Law".....

I occasionally play a death threat against me from a different era. First the source of the threat was a convicted felon, had drug addiction problems and was abusive. His girlfriend was stealing drugs from a local nursing home and had a minor daughter that was exposed to frequent fights. Now they had obtained some laced product that they were selling to the community - it got a little strange. This was funny too, I talked to him after he got out of jail for assaulting a police officer, only two weeks incarceration. He laughed, said get some product, sell some product, buy a good attorney and walk - he had friends that apparently knew good attorneys.

We told his girlfriend who was drunk to go away, we were really getting tired of them always showing up. The next thing I knew was that her boyfriend called up and left a message threatening to kill me. I had called the police on the threat but before they came he had apologized - figured that it would blow over another drunken binge.

What followed was that my girlfriends car was vandalized, smashed windshield one day, cut tires the next, punctured radiator another, cut plug wires yet another day. The police, when called said that they could do nothing about it but we could go to the Magistrate. We suspect that the girlfriend was doing it as we had called "child protection" a couple of times - they did nothing but the woman was mad.

Went to the Prince William County Magistrate, played the audio tape for the lone magistrate and they asked how much time. I told them a month and a half, they responded that too much time had passed. I identified that we had police reports during this time. I was then told that the police reports were irrelevant.

I asked for their supervisors number they responded with an incorrect number. I was also told to "take my best shot" - real professionals there in the court house. When I got in touch with the supervisor, they told me that they agreed with their Magistrate. I then asked if I must stand guard over my household with a "legal" shotgun. The Magistrate then responded that he would send "6000 law enforcement officers to stop me if I did". I then wrote a letter with a transcript of the threat, apologized for being upset. Like all Virginia authorities I never got a response.

Law Enforcement at its finest, they are fine at breaking down doors of working souls, chasing down and assaulting some poor disoriented addict but expect them to provide a solution.

Guess it depends on who gets a "death threat" or how whoever, magistrate, police are feeling that day. To this day I wonder how many patients in that nursing home were shorted their medication. How about the child who started exhibiting disturbing behavior...

...what I do know is that if one has criminal tendancies they probably have a tactic to address the consequences - such as lying and having contacts that can get them off, such as competent attorney's.

I did get kind of long winded...

All original no cut and paste, had not really written much about our "death threat" except some mentions, couple of posts. The threat article brought back that era in our lives.

The guy that made the threat was not much of a concern, his woman had been trying to get us to "fight". We believe that she was the one vandalizing us - a real winner. I was hoping that I would not have to deal with the situation.

The important thing was that the alleged "authorities" did nothing, again identifying that "rule of law" is really "rule of whimsy", or is it just for the entitled.

Lets do a Jay Bybee and re-interprete the law, yesterday a "death threat" meant nothing, today it does, tomorrow.....

I'll make a url for you ...... sorry about that it was dinner time.... :)
