Dulles Airport Reopens After Security Scare

October 22, 2007 - 5:34pm
CHANTILLY, Va. - Dulles International Airport has reopened after being evacuated due to a suspicious package.

While flights were allowed to land during the evacuation, there were some delays in departures, which will likely continue into the evening, says Courtney Prebich, a spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.

The upper level of Dulles, including the ticketing area, was evacuated after a suspicious bag was found shortly after 3 p.m. Monday at a security checkpoint.

About an hour later, a Virginia State Police bomb squad determined the bag was safe and airport employees were allowed back inside. The area reopened to passengers about 4:30 p.m.

Prebich says she doesn't know the contents of the bag or what prompted security personnel to evacuate the area.

Evacuations like Monday's incident are rare, Prebich says.
