Man Sentenced for Mountain Bike Attacks

January 20, 2007 - 8:38am
ALEXANDRIA, Va. - A homeless man has been sentenced to nearly two years in prison for using his heavy mountain bike as a weapon to attack other bicyclists on the Mount Vernon Trail.

Thirty-nine-year-old David Johnson was sentenced to a year and nine months Friday in U.S. District Court in Alexandria on his October guilty plea to assault and narcotics charges.

Authorities say Johnson swung his bike by the handlebars and seat near National Airport on July 10, knocking at least one other rider off his bike.

As many as 15 people were attacked but none sought medical attention.

Court documents show that police found bags of marijuana and hallucinogenic mushrooms on Johnson after his arrest.
