Altman to get lifetime achievement Oscar

January 11, 2006 - 6:20pm

Los Angeles (dpa) - Director-producer-writer Robert Altman is to be awarded an honorary Oscar in recognition of his life achievements, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Wednesday.

Altman, 80, has directed 37 films, produced 27 and written 16 of them. He has never won an Oscar despite five nominations for directing - for "M*A*S*H", "Nashville", "The layer", "Short Cuts" and "Gosford Park" - and two additional nominations as a producer of Best Picture nominees "Nashville" and "Gosford Park".

That will change on March 5 when Altman will be given an honorary Oscar to mark "a career that has repeatedly reinvented the art form and inspired filmmakers and audiences alike," the Academy said in a statement. "He is a master film maker and well deserves this honour," said Academy President Sid Ganis.
