Smoking Ban Hasn't Hurt Businesses, Study Finds

October 25, 2005 - 6:52pm
ROCKVILLE, Md. - Leaders in Montgomery County are clearing the air on how the smoking ban is effecting the bar and restaurant business.

The county released a report Tuesday showing that revenues and employment at restaurants and bars went up in the first year after the ban went into effect in October 2003.

The University of Maryland study compared tax and employment figures from Montgomery County with Baltimore city, and Baltimore, Frederick, Howard, Prince George's counties in Maryland and Fairfax County in Virginia.

The study showed that restaurant revenue increased at roughly the same rate in all areas.

It also showed that employment at Montgomery County establishments increased at a faster rate than in the other areas.
