Caregiver Sentenced in Rip-off of Elderly Victims

May 23, 2005 - 4:11pm
GREENBELT, Md. - A caregiver who ripped off the 96-year-old woman she was supposed to be watching is headed to prison.

A Greenbelt federal court judge sentenced Geraldine Wooten to three years and five months in jail. Wooten pleaded guilty to conspiracy.

Federal investigators say Wooten was caring for the elderly woman when she used the victim's name, Social Security number and credit history to get several credit cards.

While investigating that case, authorities say they discovered Wooten had earlier worked for a patient with Alzheimer's. They say she used that person's information to buy a house in Georgia.

Wooten is being ordered to make a total of $150,000 restitution to both victims.
