Region needs to prepare roads for influx of people

WASHINGTON - In the next two decades a lot more people will move into the metro area.

Bob Chase, president of the Northern Virginia Transportation Alliance, says more needs to be done now to prepare the transportation network to handle the influx.

"The current plans essentially just look at the existing network. The existing network is not going to serve the 2 million more people who are going to be in this region in 25 years," says Chase whose group's mission is to advance transportation improvements.

Chase says the region should consider a bridge to connect the Dulles area and Maryland, as well as improvements to Interstate 66.

"The good news is we've got a lot of important projects underway in Northern Virginia -- Dulles rail, the HOT lanes and I-95 improvements," he says.

"The bad news is there are no improvements in the pipeline after this. We've got to provide the ability to move people around and through the region.

"The sense of urgency just isn't there right now."
