Loudoun Board Changes Course on Immigration

January 4, 2008 - 5:27am
LEESBURG, Va. (AP) - The new Democratic majority on the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors is backing off on the previous board's crackdown on illegal immigration.

The board voted Thursday not to follow through on a decision to ask the state legislature to allow the county to withhold business licenses and building permits for illegal immigrants and businesses that hire them.

Independent Supervisor James Burton joined four of the five Democrats on the board in the change of course. Several say it's a waste of money for counties to enforce federal immigration laws.

The board also voted to restore powers for Chairman Scott York that had been stripped from him four years ago, including the right to set the board's agenda.

Voters ousted four Republicans in November who had been supportive of growth and development in the county.
