Sign sparked transformer fire at retirement home

June 22, 2009 - 4:34pm
ARLINGTON, Va. - A recently-installed parking sign nicked an underground power line, sparking a transformer fire at a retirement home Monday, officials say.

The fire broke out at the Elmwood House and Lockwood House retirement community in the 600 block of North Madison Street near Falls Church around 8 a.m.

Power should be restored by 7 p.m., Dominion Power spokesperson LeHa Anderson says.

About 250 residents had to be evacuated because of the incident. The seniors have been staying at a Red Cross shelter at a nearby school.

No one was injured. Damage to the building is minor.
