Racing in the street: Is it over?

February 16, 2009 - 7:14am
ACCOKEEK, Md. -- It's been exactly a year since eight people were killed during an illegal street race in Prince George's County.

At least for now, the secret world of impromptu challenges of speed in our area seems to have slowed to a crawl.

Two men still face eight counts of vehicular manslaughter when they go on trial in the next few months.

Police and people who live nearby say the crowds that used to gather in the middle of the night along Indian Head Highway are gone.

Street racers and spectators tell The Washington Post the haunting memories of last year's crash are still with them.

Police in Prince William County have also noticed a decrease in the number of races in the past year. Some predict the underworld of speed will return when the weather gets warmer.
