Man gunned down as he steps onto Metrobus

November 12, 2009 - 11:09am
WASHINGTON - A man who was leaving the funeral of a shooting victim was shot and killed Wednesday as he boarded a Metrobus.

Metropolitan Police say George Rawlings, 21, had been shot multiple times. Police say he was shot as he stepped onto a westbound X2 bus in the 1300 block of H Street NE.

Community members say the Rawlings' murder occurred after he visited the Capitol Mortuary for the funeral of 19-year-old Ashton Hunter, who was gunned down on Halloween.

The Rawlings family attorney tells The Washington Post that Rawlings had witnessed Hunter's murder and had been in hiding ever since. A police source tells The Washington Post Rawlings was not a witness.

Rawlings is the older brother of DeOnte Rawlings, a 14-year-old killed by an off-duty D.C. police officer two years ago as the officer tried to recover a stolen minibike.

Police are asking anyone with information to call them at 202-727-9099 or 1-888-919-CRIME (1-888-919-2746).

A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.

You also can call Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS or text 50411. Crime Solvers offers a a reward of up to $1,000.
