Police were investigating threats against Barry

WASHINGTON - Days after former D.C. Mayor and current D.C. Councilmember Marion Barry was arrested on stalking charges, WTOP has learned police had been investigating threats against Barry.

Police have been investigating alleged threats against Barry by the ex-husband of Donna Watts-Brighthaupt, the woman who accused Barry of stalking her Saturday.

In light of the alleged threats, Barry sent a memo to the secretary of the City Council, asking that Watts-Brighthaupt's ex-husband, Delonta Brighthaupt, be denied entrance to an event last Tuesday at the Wilson Building.

D.C.'s Protective Services Division says Brighthaupt did not have identification, and was not allowed into the building.

The threats were first reported by the Washington Examiner.

Brighthaupt was in the car with his ex-wife when she flagged down a U.S. Park Police officer in Anacostia Park and claimed that Barry was stalking her.

Barry was pulled over, questioned by U.S. Park Police, and later arrested.

Court records show Watts-Brighthaupt and her ex-husband have a history of filing protection orders against one another.

Frederick Cooke, Barry's attorney, says Barry and Watts-Brighthaupt planned to spend the weekend together in Rehoboth Beach, but Watts-Brighthaupt changed her mind after eating lunch in Annapolis.
