Teen charged in Columbia Heights double shooting

June 20, 2009 - 9:31am
WASHINGTON - An arrest has been made in connection with Thursday afternoons double shooting near the Columbia Heights Metro station.

Devyn Lamar Black, 19, faces charges of assault with a dangerous weapon. On Thursday, two men were shot near the busy intersection of 14th and Irving Streets. D.C. police have not yet released the names of the injured, but neither sustained life-threatening injuries.

Black started Monday as an intern in D.C. Council Member Jim Graham's office. Graham escorted Black to the 3rd District police station so the teen could turn himself in after Graham heard that a warrant had been issued for Black's arrest.

Graham had initially been tipped off from reporters who heard rumors that the shooter was an intern in his office. Black denied the rumors when Graham initially confronted him about them.

"I'm very sad this happened, and I'm very upset about this whole situation, but we try to provide opportunities for young people," Graham tells WTOP.

Graham adds that they do not do background checks for teens involved in the summer program Black was participating in.

Thursday's shooting is believed to be link to a dispute between to rival gangs.
