How many cops have been caught on their cells?

June 4, 2009 - 2:13pm
Mark Segraves, WTOP Radio

WASHINGTON - Nearly four years after the District banned cell phone use while driving, D.C. Police have issued more than 42,000 tickets.

But how many police officers have been caught breaking that law?

It's a question D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier gets a lot.

"We have records of no officers being disciplined through the internal affairs process," Lanier said Thursday on WTOP's Ask The Chief program.

But as Lanier pointed out, just because none have been disciplined, it doesn't mean none has been given a ticket.

"We ticket officers for parking violations. We ticket officers for other violations. So it's not to say they haven't been issued tickets, there's just no way for me to sort through the tickets to find out."

Lanier acknowledged that the public perception is that officers don't issue tickets to fellow officers.

"We'll have to leave that as the impression because there's no way to say either they are or aren't getting those tickets because there's no way of sorting out through those tickets," Lanier says.
