After WTOP story, D.C. cab rides $1 cheaper

December 2, 2008 - 6:43pm
Mark Segraves, WTOP Radio

WASHINGTON - It's about to get a little cheaper to ride a cab in the District.

Fairfax and Montgomery counties had already lifted fuel surcharges for cab riders, but WTOP reported on Monday that D.C. cabbies were still charging riders a $1 extra for gasoline.

Starting Thursday, D.C. cab riders will no longer be charged the extra cash.

Leon Swain, chairman of the D.C. Taxi Cab Commission, says low gas prices will eliminate the additional fee at 12:01 a.m. Thursday because gas prices have fallen.

The $1 surcharge has been in effect since November 2007 when commission members voted unanimously to allow drivers to charge passengers as a way to compensate for rising gas prices.

The average price for a gallon of gas in the D.C. area was near $3 in late 2007. The average price per gallon now is below $2.
