Schwartz out, Brown in on D.C. Council

November 5, 2008 - 12:24pm
WASHINGTON - You won't see Republican Carol Schwartz on the D.C. Council. Her write-in campaign for an at-large seat on the D.C. City Council failed.

With 100 percent of D.C.'s 143 precincts reporting, Democrat Kwame Brown was the top vote-getter, followed by Independent Michael Brown, in the at-large race.

Schwartz mounted a write-in bid after she lost the primary to Patrick Mara. Her primary loss came after the business community had targeted her. She had led the fight to pass the "Sick and Safe Leave Act" last year.

Schwartz, who has served on the Council a total of 14 years, had the quiet backing of Democratic Mayor Adrian Fenty, while Michael Brown had the backing of D.C. Council Chair Vince Gray.

In the other races, voters brought back Jack Evans, Muriel Bowser, Yvette Alexander and Marion Barry, as well as shadow Sen. Paul Strauss and shadow Rep. Mike Panetta.

Voters also overwhelmingly reelected Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, with 93 percent casting their ballots for her.
