The White House expressed hope there would be no further North Korean military action in the Yellow Sea that would be seen as an "escalation."

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs spoke after the rival Koreas exchanged gunfire for the first time in seven years.

Boats were damaged on both sides and it raises tension just days before the president travels to Asia.
