Md. Designates 6 Schools as Blue Ribbon Schools

December 12, 2006 - 6:09am
BALTIMORE (AP) - Six schools -- including one in Prince George's County and another in Montgomery County -- have been named this year's state's blue ribbon schools, according to state education officials.

State Superintendent Nancy Grasmick announced the winners out of more than 1,300 schools statewide Monday.

The schools are George Washington Elementary in Baltimore City, Heather Hills Elementary in Prince George's County, Hereford Middle in Baltimore County, Burleigh Manor Middle in Howard County, River Hill High in Howard County and Winston Churchill High in Montgomery County.

"Maryland has more than 1,300 schools, so being selected for this honor is an amazing achievement," Grasmick said.

Hereford Middle, Burleigh Manor, River Hill High and Winston Churchill High are in the top 10 percent of the state's schools for performance on the Maryland Assessment Scores.

Two of the schools - George Washington Elementary and Heather Hills Elementary - are economically disadvantaged schools which state officials said made substantial progress in the last three years.

The schools will be entered in the National Blue Ribbon School Competition, with winners to be announced in the fall.
