DDOT cancels Chain Bridge work due to rain

March 12, 2010 - 6:23pm
Update: The D.C. Department of Transportation has canceled work on the bridge due to heavy rain and wind in the forecast. The bridge will be open the weekend of March 13-14.

WASHINGTON - The Chain Bridge will be closed the next two weekends so the D.C. Department of Transportation can complete reconstruction work that has been postponed for months.

The region's multiple snowstorms and sub-freezing temperatures delayed work that was originally supposed to be done in late January and early February.

The bridge will be closed at 8 p.m. Friday and reopen at 5 a.m. Monday.

DDOT will pour new concrete, replace the expansion joints and fix streetlights on the bridge. Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians will not be allowed to use the bridge.

Additional closures may be needed later this month if the work is not completed.

The full project is expected to be finished by May 31.
