WASHINGTON - When it comes to cities where people could dramatically reduce their gas usage, D.C. ranks No. 1.

Because D.C. is so tech-centric and has widespread broadband access, as well as an especially tough commute, Forbes magazine says many people could be telecommuting.

The magazine looked at the cost of commuting, what's needed to do it, the likelihood an employer would support telecommuting and the hidden cost that stay-at-home workers experience.

Forbes says the federal government really should be the one setting the example since public and private entities around here haven't really established standards for telework.

Here is the list of cities Forbes says could be cutting their gas bills:

  1. D.C.
  2. Atlanta, Ga.
  3. Seattle, Wash
  4. San Diego
  5. San Jose, Calif.
  6. Phoenix, Ariz.
  7. Sacramento
  8. Los Angeles
  9. San Francisco

Tied for tenth are Baltimore and Austin, Texas.
