Wolf Calls for Investigation Into Greenway Finances

WASHINGTON - How accurate is the financial information the company that owns the Dulles Greenway provided to Virginia? Rep. Frank R. Wolf, R-Va., wants Virginia's attorney general to investigate.

"I think they are going to find it's a Ponzi scheme," Wolf tells WTOP. "It think they're going to find that this whole setup is set up in such a way that the toll payer has no protection."

Wolf opposes the toll increases that will more than double what commuters pay now. The increase will make the Dulles Greenway the most expensive toll road in the nation. The road carries an average of 57,000 vehicles a day.

The State Corporation Commission approved gradual increases in the tolls that will bring a one-way rush-hour toll to $4.80 by 2012. Drivers will pay as much as $9.60 per round trip by January 2012.

The General Assembly needs to take a second look at the law that allows the increases and rewrite it, Wolf says.

"Whoever drafted this law, how ever it was drafted, it is very, very flawed."

A spokesperson for the Dulles Greenway says all of the information the company has given the state is accurate.

Wolf doubts it.

"There was always something smelly here."
