Storm caused $15M in beach erosion

November 16, 2009 - 4:16pm

DOVER, Del. - A Delaware official says last week's storm caused $15 million in beach erosion.

Delaware's Secretary of the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, Collin O'Mara, says Delaware beaches lost four million to five million cubic yards of sand. The last time the state saw similar erosion was 1998 as a result of two nor'easters that hit about a week apart.

Officials in Maryland are also surveying the damage. Terry McGean, the city engineer for Ocean City, says a three-person team surveying the beaches is expected to be finished by Wednesday. The city already had a dredging project planned for 2010, McGean said, so that will be moved up to replenish the beaches with sand.
