2 officers injured following early morning brawl

May 17, 2009 - 1:41pm
WASHINGTON -- A man has been killed, and two D.C. police officers have been injured after an early morning shootout in Adams Morgan.

Just after 3 a.m., a fight broke out near the intersection of Champlain Street NW and Kalorama Road. NW.

"At one point, one of the subjects pulled a handgun and fired it," Commander George Kucik tells WTOP.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier says the officers were working undercover on a robbery detail, when they say the fight break out.

Michael Griffin, 18, started shooting and wouldn't drop his gun. The two officers chased the suspect, eventually exchanging gunfire, killing Grffin.

One officer was shot in the back, and another suffered a superficial wound to the back of the leg. Both officers were taken to the hospital and are expected to recover.

The fight happened just as the bars in the area were closing, and happened just a block away from the crowded bar and nightclub scene on 18th Street.

One Adams Morgan resident tells WTOP that he thinks violence in the area has gotten out of hand, and plans to move to Maryland.

"We have had 3 homicides," says D.C. Councilman Jim Graham (D-Ward 1), "God knows how many assaults right at this dead end."

Another shooting happened Friday night in the Columbia Heights neighborhood.

Officers found the body of 20-year-old Marcus Robinson lying in the 3000 block of 14th Street, NW.

Police are looking for two suspects who were seen leaving the scene in a red Jeep Cherokee with unknown license plates.
