D.C. cop caught smoking pot in Rock Creek Park

September 3, 2008 - 4:10am
WASHINGTON - A D.C. Police officer is under arrest after he was caught smoking marijuana in Rock Creek Park Tuesday morning.

The officer, an 18-year veteran, tried to evade police by running through a wooded area before driving off in his car. He was caught minutes later by police after he abandoned his car and took off on foot a second time.

Assistant D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham says the officer, who is assigned to the Sixth District, has turned in his badge and gun, pending the outcome of a trial.

He will continue to collect his pay while on trail, but may be fired if convicted, as well as lose his pension.
