Marijuana found at mayor's home tied to drug ring

August 6, 2008 - 7:33pm
BERWYN HEIGHTS, Md. - Marijuana found on the doorstep of a mayor's home was part of a large drug ring that shipped drugs to random homes, Prince George's County Police say.

Police say Berwyn Heights Mayor Cheye Calvo does not appear to be connected.

The ring involved more than 400 pounds of marijuana being delivered to random addresses all over the county by an independent courier. Police say a third party would then pick up the marijuana.

Police have arrested two people in the case and confiscated 417 pounds of marijuana.

Police say they did not make a mistake when they raided Calvo's home and shot and killed his two black Labrador retrievers after seeing him bring a package addressed to his wife -which contained 32 pounds of marijuana - inside.

"Our team and the sheriff's team followed appropriate procedures and followed the law," Prince George's County Police Chief Melvin High says. "I'm an animal lover and pet owner myself and so, I can certainly sympathize with that."

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
