Major Roads Clear After Snowfall

WASHINGTON - Ice-covered side streets and sidewalks prompted many school systems to open late Thursday.

Road crews continued Thursday to clear the icy patches left over from the season's first snowfall.

"Don't get lulled into a false sense of security," says WTOP Traffic Reporter Lisa Baden about patches of black ice that are still out there.

"We're out there trying to treat any icy spots," Maryland State Highway Administration spokesman Chuck Gischlar tells WTOP.

"We've got 592 trucks out there salting and sanding," Virginia Department of Transportation spokesman Mike Salmon tells WTOP. "We recommend that drivers take extra caution out there."

Streets in some neighborhoods are ice-packed. Road crews have started to go into neighborhoods. Salmon says crews are visiting subdivisions they know are "trouble spots."

Weather conditions slowed MARC trains Thursday morning, with some trains an hour and a half late. There also were delays on some Virginia Railway Express trains.

Three area school systems -- Frederick in Maryland and Prince William and Fauquier in Virginia -- took the day off, while others opened late. Click here for the closings list.

Snow totals varied across the metro region. WTOP's Kristi King found as much as 4 inches of snow in Rockville.

The snow totals didn't set any records, but the temperature Thursday at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport did tie a 1966 record. At 8 a.m. it was 16 degrees.

"This is much colder than it is in the middle of January," says Channel 7 meteorologist Doug Hill.
