Cell Phones Used to Collect Child Support

August 6, 2007 - 4:36pm

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Virginia is using cell phone records to help track down and collect money from those who owe child support payments.

The state is among the first to subpoena cell phone records to help locate some of the 268,000 people who aren't paying the child support they owe.

Officials say that altogether, these parents owe more than $2 billion to 480,000 Virginia children.

As a result of the program, officials obtained more than 52,000 active cell phone numbers from seven of the largest cell phone providers.
