One Dead After Police Involved Shooting in Va.

May 15, 2007 - 2:38pm
WOODBRIDGE, Va. - A quiet, working class neighborhood in Prince William County was shattered Tuesday morning after a police involved shooting.

Police were called to a home in the 13400 block of Forest Glen Road before 8 a.m. Tuesday. A witness who contacted police said an elderly man was standing in front of the home firing a shotgun.

Police spokeswoman Erica Hernandez says the man refused to listen when officers arrived.

"They gave him several commands to drop the weapon. At some point, he pointed the weapon at the officers, and that's when they shot."

Hernandez says the man, in his 70's, had a history of mental illness. No one else was injured by gunfire.

Investigators found several shotgun casings outside the man's home.

Police say the department's internal affairs unit routinely investigates all police involved shootings that occur in the county.
