Win piece of moon if your line is better than Neil's

June 17, 2009 - 3:10pm
WASHINGTON - When astronaut Neil Armstrong took his first step onto the surface of the moon during the Apollo 11 mission, his words became legendary: "That's one small step for a man ... one giant leap for mankind."

Now NewScientist, the British science magazine, is asking its readers to come up with a better line.

The prize? A piece of moon rock valued at about $1,000 per gram. The piece was authenticated by researchers at the University of California in Los Angeles and weighs nearly 1.4 grams.

"The piece of moon rock is part of a lunar meteorite found by French collector Luc Labenne," NewScientist Editor Roger Highfield says. "Found in the Dhofar region of Southern Oman."

"It's not too tiny a piece, and the end cut is the favorite part (for collectors).
