Silver Spring Retirees to Dance with Partners Half Their Age This Coming Friday, July 30, to Raise Money for Riderwood's Benevolent Care Fund. "Dancing With the Riderwood Stars" has residents dance with staff members to raise money for the endowment which provides financial assistance to residents accessing long-term health care who might need it. The residents will dance the Mamba, Foxtrot, Hip-Hop, and Disco. The audience will pledge money to vote for their favorite dancers, with a trophy presented to the winning dance couple.

Meet the latest round of 5 recipients of the Meyer Foundation Exponent Awards The awards are presented to nonprofit leaders in our region who work tirelessly every day -- especially in this difficult economic environment. Intended for executives who may be in danger of burnout or who would benefit from a leadership development grant to take their skills and organization to a new level, the Exponent Award honors up to five leaders each year. Organizations of award recipients receive a grant of $100,000 over two years to be used for leadership development.

Boys Town Washington, DC is part an organization dedicated to the housing and education of at-risk children, founded by Father Edward J. Flanagan. It was made famous in the 1938 movie starring Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney. Then it was an orphanage, today it is turning troubled teens around. Boys Town Washington, DC began in 1993. Last year, 3,254 children received assistance through Boys Town DC's Integrated Continuum of Care services, including 375 who received direct care and treatment.

The U.S. National Physical Activity Plan has a vision: One day, all Americans will be physically active and they will live, work, and play in environments that facilitate regular physical activity.
The Plan is a comprehensive set of policies, programs, and initiatives that aim to increase physical activity in all segments of the American population. The Plan is the product of a private-public sector collaborative. Hundreds of organizations are working together to change our communities in ways that will enable every American to be sufficiently physically active.
The Plan aims to create a national culture that supports physically active lifestyles. Its ultimate purpose is to improve health, prevent disease and disability, and enhance quality of life.

»  Social Responsibility @ Social Safeway
At the grand opening of the Georgetown (Social) Safeway store, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation and Washington, D.C. Safeway stores announced a District-wide campaign to combat childhood obesity. The two organizations will work together to create 10 healthy school gardens in Washington, D.C. schools. The gardens will be planted at schools which are members of Alliance's Healthy Schools Program, a national program which supports more than 8,800 schools across the U.S.
The inaugural school garden was planted at River Terrace Elementary in Northeast Washington and the program will grow to include nine other District schools with at least one garden in each of the city's eight wards over the next year. The healthy school garden program will provide a grant from Safeway to each school that will cover the cost of materials to construct, plant, and harvest the school garden.

Theatre artists and productions who won at The 26th Annual Helen Hayes Awards presented at the Warner Theatre.
Out of Washington's 73 professional theatres, 57 theatres produced 182 productions that met eligibility requirements during the January 1 - December 31, 2009 judging cycle. From these shows, 151 artists, ensembles and productions from 25 theatres were nominated in 26 categories. Sixty-three judges, selected by a panel of area artistic directors, cast 22,558 scores in consideration of 2821 pieces of work (performances, designs, productions, directions etc). From that work, 1,669 were acting performances alone.

»  What Does It Mean To Be Human???
On March 17, The Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History marked its 100th anniversary on the National Mall with the public opening of its newest exhibition hall - the David H. Koch Hall of Human Origins. This exhibition is based on decades of cutting-edge research by Smithsonian scientists, and is the result of an international collaboration with over 60 research and educational organizations and over 100 researchers from around the world. It is an immersive, interactive journey through 6 million years of scientific evidence for human origins and the stories of survival and extinction in our family tree during times of dramatic climate instability.
The exhibition hall will be open during regular museum hours (10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) The Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, located at 10th Street and Constitution Avenue N.W. Admission is free

At the Kennedy Center with a StarStudded New Season coming in September. Among the highlights of the 2010-2011 season:
• To spotlight the man for whom the center is named, The Presidency of John F. Kennedy: A 50th Anniversary Celebration will commemorate the inauguration of the nation's 35th president. The two week celebration's opening ceremony on January 20, 2011, the exact 50th anniversary of President Kennedy's inauguration.
• The Theater Season will include the Kennedy Center's own production of Stephen Sondheim's Follies, Broadway hits such as Hair, South Pacific, Next to Normal, and Wicked.
• The National Symphony Orchestra will present the inaugural season with music director Christoph Eschenbach, who will conduct the season's Opening Night with Renée Fleming and Lang Lang.
• The Ballet Season features legendary dance companies from around the world, including American Ballet Theatre, Ballet Nacional de Cuba, The Joffrey Ballet, Mariinsky Ballet, New York City Ballet, The Royal Danish Ballet, and the Kennedy Center's own The Suzanne Farrell Ballet.

»  Give a Shock - Save A Life

»  Lincoln Museum at Ford's Theatre
The Ford's Theatre Museum is now open to the public Located below the newly restored Ford's Theatre (511 10th Street NW), the Museum uses 21st-century technology to transport visitors to 19th-century Washington. The museum's remarkable collection of historic artifacts are supplemented with a variety of narrative devices—environmental recreations, videos and three-dimensional figures, bringing to light Abraham Lincoln's presidency and life in Washington, D.C.
Admission to tour Ford's Theatre is free but does require a ticket. Advance tickets may be reserved through TicketMaster. The Ford's Theatre National Historic Site (composed of the Ford's Theatre Museum, Theatre and Petersen House) is open for daytime visits from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily (except December 25). The lobby to the theatre opens at 8:30 a.m. every morning and entry to the site begins at 9 a.m. Final entry into the theatre is 4:30 p.m. and the site close at 5 p.m. Ford's Theatre 511 10th Street NW.

»  Breast Cancer Survivors Pulling Together
By rowing together as part of WeCanRow DC whose mission is to provide new opportunities for breast cancer survivors to heal, both physically and emotionally, by being active participants in their own recovery and part of a mutually empowering team.
WeCanRow DC was started in 2004 by 3 breast cancer survivors who rowed at 3 different clubs in the Washington area. The first Learn to Row weekend, coached by Holly Metcalf, was held in May, 2005 at Capital Rowing Club in Washington, DC. Many of the 15 rowers introduced to the sport that weekend have continued to row together at Potomac Boat Club, joined by the Learn to Row participants from the subsequent years. The WeCanRow DC Learn to Row weekend has become an annual LIVESTRONG event, featuring catered meals, massages and consultation with a physical therapist.

»  "Combating hunger. Creating opportunity."
DC Central Kitchen continues what is has been doing for 20 years running a food recovery program that receives more that a ton of surplus food each day that would otherwise go to waste and turns it into 4,500 meals for the hungry in the greater Washington, DC region. But DC Central Kitchen is not a "soup kitchen." It is a program that is constantly preparing unemployed, underemployed, previously incarcerated persons, and homeless adults for careers in the food service industry.

The 10th Annual National Capital Area Cappies Awards Gala was held at 7pm on June 7, 2009, at the Concert Hall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. At the Gala, performers, and tech crews, and critics from 60 high schools in Northern Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., received 35 "Cappies" Awards. Click on the logo for the winners!

You can get an intimate, never-before-seen view of Abraham Lincoln's presidency and family life by visiting President Lincoln's Cottage. Designated a National Monument by President Clinton in 2000, President Lincoln's Cottage served as Lincoln's family residence for a quarter of his presidency and is the most significant historic site directly associated with Lincoln's presidency aside from the White House. President Lincoln's Cottage has been restored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Entrance to President Lincoln's Cottage is by guided tour only. Adults: $12 Children (6-12): $5 National Trust (NTHP) members: $8. President Lincoln's Cottage is located on the Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH) campus. »  Ms Wheelchair America 2009 Crowned Here!
The Ms Wheelchair America pageant was held in our area and 26 title holders from around the country competed for a week for the honor and duty to represent all people in wheelchairs. The crown was passed to Ms. Wheelchair Texas 2008 - Michelle Colvard. Disabled since birth due to Spina Bifida. Michelle has a a Master's degree in Health Promotion from the University of Texas School of Public Health and is the Executive Director of Houston's Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities. She lives in Houston with her husband.
