Mumps outbreak in NY, NJ prompt local health alert

March 21, 2010 - 12:50pm
PRINCE GEORGE'S, Md. - An out-of-state outbreak of mumps is causing a local health department to ask people to get vaccinated.

The outbreak of mumps has been among Hasidic Jewish populations in New York and New Jersey. More than 900 cases have been reported among kids and adults.

It started when some children at Jewish summer camp in the Catskills came down with mumps then brought it home.

The Prince George's County Health Department recommends people traveling to or from those states with possible contact with Hasidic enclaves to get a shot against mumps.

The Health Department says you don't need the shot if you've already had mumps or a doctor has confirmed that you are immune to the illness.

The outbreak is also occurring in Hasidic enclaves in Israel, but there's no mumps outbreak locally.
