Do you know what turkeys are gobbling?

November 25, 2009 - 3:16pm

WASHINGTON - It's almost time to carve the Thanksgiving turkey -- but some people are concerned about a drug that many turkeys are fed.

Roxarsone is often added to poultry feed mainly to help birds grow and keep them healthy.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says Roxarsone is safe, but contains very small amounts of arsenic.

"The levels are not high enough to cause acute effects or immediate effects, but there's concern over longer term exposure," says Dr. Keeve Nachman with the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health.

"Exposures to low levels of arsenic over time are becoming more and more of a concern as we have a better and better understanding of arsenic toxicology."

A bill introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives this week would ban Roxarsone from America's poultry supply.
