Jun Hong Kim, a freshman at Stone Bridge High School, and Erica Gouse, a senior at Dominion High School, took home the two top prizes at the Loudoun County Public Schools Regional Science and Engineering Fair. Judging of the 191 exhibits in the Dominion High School gymnasium started the morning of March 13, and awards were announced that evening.
Kim's project, "The effect of alliaria petiolata on the Arubuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) and its effect on the growth of native plants," was first in the Environmental Management Division.
Gouse's presentation of her project, "The effect of diacetyl (Popcorn Lung Chemical) in intestinal flora: A medical study," was first in Medicine and Health Sciences.
Michael Fowler, Briar Woods High School senior, was named alternate Best In Fair for "The correlation of carbon dioxide and hurricanes," in the Earth and Planetary Science division.
Orbital Sciences sponsored the fair, with support from Northrup Grumman. The winners will compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, May 11-17, in Atlanta, Ga.
